Kristina Van Horst Is Bringing Fans Backstage on Passes

Cosplayer, rock vocalist, and full-time character shapeshifter Kristina Van Horst (@krissyvh) is now on Passes, and her most dedicated fans get a front-row seat to all of it.

Kristina has built two worlds that most people would keep separate. In one, she is a cosplayer who transforms into a character down to the last detail. In the other, she is the lead singer of TemperMental, the Southern California rock band she fronts on stage. On Passes, she stopped keeping them separate.

What's a cosplay build that completely humbled you — like, you thought it would be easy and then it absolutely wasn't?

Megumin Race Queen Ver. from KonoSuba ! Her staff/flag was my first "big" prop build and I definitely didn't give myself enough time. I only had two days and it was much more difficult than I had expected, but I got it done on time and it turned out alright + I learned how to use a dremel ! :)

What's the most unhinged thing that's happened mid-shoot or mid-performance that you just had to roll with?

Didn't roll with in on purpose... But one time a security guard tried to stop our band's set early at an event during our last song. He went up to all of the other band members behind me and tried to tell them to stop while we were playing (I was fully locked in. Didn't have a clue he was even there). So we completely ignored him (while playing Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine) when the song ended, the audience was shouting for an encore, so I said "let's do Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit" and went right into it. Security guard was pretty unhappy apparently. I never even knew he was there until people after told me how badass I was for ignoring him.

What's a cosplay you've wanted to bring to life but haven't tacked yet — and what's been stopping you?

I have so many, but one character I've been thinking about a lot is Frieren, my only hesitation is that I'd really wanna make a helmet pigtail wig which I've never done before. I also want to make her staff, which would be challenging for me but definitely doable. Just gotta have the courage to try !

What's something you believed about yourself as a creator three years ago that you've completely unlearned?

I'm not sure. I'm no expert at social media and am always still figuring out and learning new ways to create online content and in music and cosplay. I guess I'd say that I've become a lot more open minded to new ideas and just trying stuff out for all the ways I create.

What's a moment from being on Passes that genuinely caught you off guard in the best way?

When subscribers told me that they wanted to see me just being me. I'm a pretty goofy guy but I don't always show that side of me online, so to see my personality appreciated was really special for me.

What's something your Passes community has said or done that made you rethink how you show up for them?

They've shown me so much support and kindness, it inspires me to try new things without doubt and to become the very best version of myself.

How do you balance the performer version of yourself with the everyday version — or are they basically the same person at this point?

I'm pretty different from how I appear on stage, which is more confident and loud lol. I'm actually pretty introverted and socially awkward, and I'm usually pretty quiet too... until you get to know me. Then I yap a lot hahaha. Being on stage is fun for me and doesn't really feel like a fake persona or anything, just a different side of me I guess.
