Automated Messages: Build Deeper Fan Connections on Autopilot

Passes Updates·

Take your fan relationships to the next level with smart, trigger-based messaging that responds automatically to fan actions.

Automated Messaging 101

Staying consistently engaged with your fans is one of the most important drivers of retention and revenue on Passes. But doing it manually, for every follow, every purchase, every expired membership, is not scalable.

Automated Messages solves that.

This feature lets you build smart, personalized messaging sequences that trigger based on real fan behaviors. Welcome new followers, celebrate membership purchases, re-engage lapsed subscribers, and respond to content interactions, all without lifting a finger. Think of it as an upgraded version of Welcome Messages, with significantly more control through conditionals, delays, and rich text formatting.

How to Set Up Automated Messages on Passes

Getting started takes just a few steps.

  1. Go to Creator Tools in your left-hand sidebar and select Automated Messages
  2. Click + New Automation to start building your sequence
  3. Choose a Fan Action Trigger to determine what starts the automation
  4. Hit Save to create the automation
  5. Add additional steps by selecting Conditions or Auto Messages to build out your sequence
  6. Configure each step to your preferences and save when you are done

What Can Trigger an Automated Message?

Automated Messages respond to real fan behaviors so your outreach happens at exactly the right moment. Here are all available triggers:

  • On Follow: Welcome new fans the moment they follow you
  • On Unfollow: Reach out when a fan unfollows, if appropriate
  • On Membership Purchase: Celebrate when fans buy any membership tier or a specific one
  • On Membership Expire: Re-engage fans when their membership lapses
  • Free Trial: Connect with fans who start a free trial
  • On Livestream End: Follow up with fans after a livestream concludes
  • On Post Comment: Respond automatically when fans comment on your posts
  • On Fanwall Comment: Engage fans who leave comments on your wall
  • Message with Keywords: Trigger messages based on specific keywords fans send you
  • Like Post: Reach out when fans like your content
  • On Marketplace Purchase: Thank fans for marketplace purchases
  • On Content Purchase: Engage fans who buy content directly from your Vault

How to Use Conditions to Target the Right Fans

Conditions work as filters inside your automation sequence. They determine which fans qualify to receive your messages based on rules you define, so you are never sending the wrong message to the wrong person.

Here is how conditions work:

  • Add conditions to filter which fans move through your automation
  • Combine multiple rules using And/Or logic for precise targeting
  • Use Group Conditions to mix And and Or logic for more complex scenarios

Example: You could build an automation that triggers on membership purchase and only sends a message if the fan has also tipped you before or purchased content in the last 30 days. This keeps your most personalized messages reserved for your most engaged fans.

How to Build an Effective Automated Message Sequence

The real power of Automated Messages comes from combining multiple elements into a single multi-step flow. Here is what each element does:

  • Triggers determine which fan action starts the automation
  • Conditions filter which fans qualify to receive messages
  • Auto Messages are the custom messages qualifying fans receive
  • Delays space out your communication so it feels natural
  • Rich Text Formatting makes your messages more engaging and personal

You can build multiple steps within a single automation, creating sophisticated messaging flows that adapt to fan behavior over time.

Important Things to Know Before You Start

Existing Welcome Messages Your old Welcome Messages are still visible but can no longer be edited. To update or replace them, create a new automation using the On Follow trigger inside Automated Messages.

Running Multiple Automations You can set up multiple automations for the same trigger with different conditions. This lets you send tailored messages to different fan segments without creating overlap, as long as the conditions are distinct.

Automation Limits

  • Maximum of 20 steps per automation
  • Maximum of 40 automations per creator account
  • Maximum of 50 conditions per condition step, including nested conditions
  • Condition steps have a maximum depth of 3 tiers

Tracking Performance All messages sent through automations appear individually in Analytics under Messages, giving you full visibility into how each sequence is performing.

Avoiding Duplicate Messages If two automations share identical triggers and conditions, fans will receive both messages. Automations do not check against each other, so review your sequences carefully when setting up multiple flows for the same trigger.
